First Call for Presentations- 'Now Closed'
1st Connecticut Conference on Natural Resources
Friday, March 9th 2007, University of Connecticut, Storrs/Mansfield, Connecticut

You are invited to share your projects, research and presentations with the audience at the 1st Connecticut Conference on Natural Resources.  The conference is organized around multi-disciplinary themes that represent current natural resource/environmental issues facing Connecticut.  Please review the themes and consider how your presentation fits when  submitting an abstract.

Presentations are called for in the following themes:

THEME 1: Connecticut’s Coastal Connections-conservation threats and opportunities
POTENTIAL TOPICS: Fish Passage, Nutrient Loading, Salt Marsh Management, Hypoxia, Coastal Erosion, Coastal Plant and Animal Species of Concern, Development Policies in Long Island Sound

THEME 2: Invasive Species and Emerging Diseases- threats and impacts to ecosystems
POTENTIAL TOPICS: Aquatic Plant Invasions, Terrestrial Flora Invaders, Changing Composition of Forests, Phragmites Eradication, Insect Invaders, Mute Swans, Largemouth Bass Virus, Forest Disease, Invasive Species Policy

THEME 3: Connecticut’s Changing Landscape
POTENTIAL TOPICS:  Sprawl and Associated Regulation, Smart Growth Initiatives, Land use Change, Zoning, Concepts for Regional Planning among Towns, Open Space Preservation, Land Trusts in Connecticut, Impervious Cover, Water Quality Changes

THEME 4: In-Stream Flows: policy and ecological research
POTENTIAL TOPICS: Fish Habitat Requirements, Case Studies of In-stream Flow Conflicts, Groundwater Connections to Stream flow, Temperature and Stream Regulation, New In-stream Flow Regulations for Connecticut, Stream Species of Conservation Concern

THEME 5: Abundant Wildlife: opportunities for removing barriers to harvest-based management and recreation
POTENTIAL TOPICS: Quality Turkey Hunting in CT-how to spread the word? Deer Baiting as Management, Early Goose Season, Public Lands, Private Holdings that Successfully Allow Hunting, Open Fields Initiatives, Public Attitudes Towards Hunting, Future Impact of S. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge Acquisitions for Connecticut

THEME 6: Forest Ecosystems in Connecticut: placing value on the services they provide
POTENTIAL TOPICS: Non-market Values of Natural Ecosystems, Farmland and Forested Open Space Conservation, Value of Forests Related to Water Supply and Quality, Contribution of Forests to Connecticut’s Economy, Biomass Power and Related Topics

You may submit for one of the following formats:

  • A 20 minute presentation which will be scheduled with related presentations in the same theme
  • A poster display
  • A 1.5 hour workshop or activity that features audience participation

Abstracts are restricted to 250 words and must be emailed to: ccnr2007@gmail.com

In the subject line of the email please write: “CCNR Abstract Submission”

In the body of the email include in this order:

  • Presenter’s name and affiliation
  • Presenter’s address, phone, and email
  • Co-authors and affiliations as needed
  • Presentation title (60 character limit, including spaces)
  • Indicate preference for a 20 min presentation, poster display, or 1.5 hour workshop
  • 250 word abstract
  • Indicate the theme most appropriate for this presentation

The deadline for submission is January 15th, 2007
